A

A/B Split

An email that allows multiple versions of the same message to be tested to determine which is better. All aspects of the message can be tested

API

Application programming interface. The BSD API is a way for web programs perform various options like processing forms or exporting and adding data to constituents

Admin User

User type with access to the BSD Tools based on their permission level or role

Authorize.net

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with. More information can be found here

Adyen

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with, more information can be found here

Automatic Response

An automated email that can be sent to your constituents after completing a form

B

Branches

A system in the BSD Tools that allows for you to have multiple instances of the tools within your larger install. Great for federated organizations or those with multiple tax statuses

C

CAPTCHA

A CAPTCHA (an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human

Constituent Group

A means of putting constituents together to reference later. This can be done via forms, uploads or searches. Constituents can be in all or none of your groups, and this will not effect their ability to get email in general

CSV

A file type for your constituent or contribution imports. These can be easily exported from Excel, Numbers or Open Office

CyberSource

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with. More information can be found here

Custom Constituent Field

A field type that can be added from under the "People and Lists" menu. This is meant to track permanent data like "College" or "Mother's Maiden Name"

Custom Signup Field

A field type that can be added on an individual signup form. Meant to be used in the context of the form like "Your Comments".

Custom Donation Field

A field type that can be added on an individual donation form.

Cards

A module that allows for constituents to send out custom messages (along with an image set by you) to their friends and family. Can be set as a premium when paired with a donation form.

Clone

An option to create a new form or email based off the details of a previous instance.

Constituent

A person in your database

Click

A metric that lets you know a constituent has clicked on a link within an email

A feature of the BSD Tools Mailer which will give recipients different text based on the logic written in a template, our full documentation can be found here

D

DKIM

DomainKeys Identified Mail is an email validation system designed toallow receiving mail exchangers to check that incoming mail from a domain is authorized by that domain's administrators. This can be set up on a domain by domain basis by BSD, but is not required

Dictionary

A module in the BSD Tools that allows you to change the default language outputted by your forms to another language(s) or just change existing phrasing

Donation form

A form that allows you to collect donations from your constituents.

Deactivate

The ability to mark a form as no longer in use. When Deactivitated, a form will redirect to the URL set in the form's "Inactive Redirect URL" field

DNS Record

Domain Name System is a naming system that designates domain names and maps those names to IP addresses.

E

Events

A module in the BSD Tools that allows you to create grassroots or official events that your constituents can attend or organize. 

Event Type

The organizing structure for the Events module, essentially a set of rules that determine the structure of the events within

External ID

A field in the BSD Tools database designed to store unique identifiers from other databases. External IDs will also serve to dedupe and merge data when used in an upload. Be sure your value is unique or this can cause incorrect data merging.

G

Google Analytics

A service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about a website's traffic and traffic sources and measures conversions and donations. Analytics can be used in conjunction with the BSD Tools to get a complete picture of activity on your site. The details of BSD's integration can be found here.

H

Hard Bounce

A hard bounce indicates an email that cannot be delivered. When a hard bounce happens on an address more than once in a more than 24 hour period, the BSD Tools will automatically unsubscribe that email address.

I

ISP

An Internet Service Provider is a telephone or telecommunications company that provides Internet access to its customers.

L

Litle/Vantiv

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with. More information can be found here

Library

A module in the BSD tools that allows you to upload an file you want to use on your forms or emails.

M

Meta tags

Are tags used in HTML of a form or page to provide structured metadata, specifically to services like Google or Facebook. Meta tags will determine what information Facebook will populate when a link is shared. Meta tags can be added on a form by form basis in the setup.

Module

The core elements that make up the BSD Tools. The donation tool, the mailer, signup forms etc.

Mailing Template

An HTML wrapper that determines the look and feel of a given email.

O

Open

A metric that lets you know an email has been opened by your constituents. When an email is opened, a transparent graphic that we embed into your email is downloaded allowing us to know the message was viewed.

Opt-in

The act of someone granting their permission to be added to your database

Override Wrapper ID

A parameter that can be added to the end of a URL to change the wrapper for a given page on a one off basis. This code is listed on the manage wrapper page and is added to the end of a URL to take effect. Example: ?override_wrapper_id=gwpRG. More details can be found here

P

PayPal Payments Pro

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with. You can find out more here

Personalization Tags

A set of system- and list-specific tags that allow for dynamic and personalized campaign content, like permission reminder, virtual business card data, external web content, or subscriber information.

Personal Fundraising

A module in the BSD Tools that allows your constituents to set up their own fundraising pages to raise money towards a personal goal

Plain Text

A version of an email that has all HTML elements (images, links, styles etc.) removed. This version will be sent automatically only to constituents that have that preference specifically set in their email browser.

Payment Gateway

A technology that allows the BSD Tools to process contributions. Payment gateways are connected to processors and are the determining factor in whether a donation is accepted or declined. The BSD Tools work with several vendor in this space as detailed here

Payment Processor

Along with a Payment Gateway, combines to allow the BSD Tools to process contributions on your behalf. These are usually issued by your bank or by your gateway provider.

PayPal Payflow Pro

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with.

Q

QuickDonate

A service within the BSD Tools that allows your donors to save their payment information for future use, much like on a retail site. When the donor returns to the site after enrolling their information is prefilled, allowing them to just choose an amount an process their contribution.

QuickDonate Link

A special link within an email that, when clicked, uses a constituent's QuickDonate account information to process a contribution without actually having to go to the form.

R

Recurring Contribution

A contribution that is processed on a set interval, usually monthly.

Role

A set of permissions that can be assigned to Admin Users of the BSD Tools.

Recurring Mailings

Mailings that will go out automatically on a predermined interval to a predetermined audience.

S

Stripe

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with. More information can be found here

Source Codes

A metric for allowing a better understanding of the origin of a signup, donation or constituent. More informtation can be found here

Signup Form

An action form in the BSD Tools that process constituent information. These can be used for petitions, surveys, etc. Essentially any information collection form that doesn't take contributions.

Signup Source

List information gathered for your subscribers that indicates the way the subscriber joined your list.

Shortcut

A simple redirect that can be set in the BSD Tools.

Slug

The unique element at the end of the URL for a BSD Tools page. While this is automatically derived from your page title, it can also be customized as well.

Share Form

A form that gives your constituents the option to share content with their friends and family via email, Facebook or Twitter

Sourcerer

A field in the mailing creation process "Add a Campaign Source Code" that will automatically add its contents (along with other Google Analytics parameters) as BSD and Google source codes

Subscription Status

The current status of a constituent in the BSD Tools database. A constituent is either subscribed or unsubscribed.

Scheduled Mailing

A mailing that is automatically set to send at a specific time in the future.

T

Trust Commerce

One of the payment gateways that the BSD Tools are compatable with. More information can be found here

Thank You Options

These will determine the path of a constituent after they fill out a form.

Ticketing Donation Form

A donation form that allows the donor to buy "tickets" or any other product. While not a fulfillment service, this will allow for simple event ticketing or merchandise purchasing.

Tags

A means of classifying the content/concept of an email, either at the time of send or after the fact. Emails can be searched for an sorted by tags to allow for easy statistical comparison.

Tracking Options

An option within forms that allow for unique code to be added to your form and thank you pages. Great when used in conjunction with Google or Facebook. For the code to insert on your thank you pages, they must be hosted by BSD.

Thank You Email

An automated email that can be sent to your constituents after completing a donation form.

TWIG

The scripting language that is the basis for the conditional mailing tool. Full documentation can be found here

Total Click Rate

A rate of clicks calculated for each email. It's determined by the number of times links in the email were clicked, divided by the number of people who received it.

Total Open Rate

A rate of opens calculated for each email. It's determined by the number of times the email was opened, divided by the number of people who received it.

U

Unique Clicks Rate

The click rate as counted only once for each subscriber that clicks a link in an email.

Unique Open Rate

The open rate as counted only once for each subscriber that opens an email.

W

WYSIWYG Editor

An acronym for "What you see is what you get" that refers to the text and image editor present in the setup of BSD forms and mass mailings. They allow you to see what your final product will look like as you are creating it, without the need for HTML.

Wrapper

An HTML wrapper that determines the look and feel of a given page. Wrappers can be made directly from HTML or by using dynamic URLs
